An Attitude of Kindness
World Kindness Day was over the weekend, and it really got me thinking. This has not been an easy year and people have experienced varying degrees of hardship from job loss, pay cuts, separation from friends and family, and loss of family and friends among other things.
The world could benefit from a little extra kindness towards each other. I absolutely encourage you to celebrate World Kindness Day by surprising a stranger with a random act of kindness, but this also got me thinking about how kind we are (or are not) to OURSELVES?
And I don't mean just treating yourself, but how do you talk to yourself?
A few years ago, I was at my absolute lowest point of being kind to myself. I was constantly obsessing over my weight loss and prep for a fitness competition, comparing myself to how I looked for a competition the year before, and comparing myself to random competitors online. (Bottom line - I didn't lose enough weight and didn't feel like I deserved to be on stage)
This is when I knew that I needed to do something about all the perfectionist thoughts in my brain, because it became crystal clear that I was never going to live up to my own totally unrealistic expectations.
If you've also been there comparing yourself to others, thinking or talking badly about your body, or getting hung up on what you used to look like, you are NOT alone.
A good place to start when dealing with those negative thoughts is with daily affirmations. You can write these down, put em on post-it notes on your mirror, or save them in your phone to read when those negative thoughts are creeping in.
I choose to be kind to myself and accept myself in my entirety
I’m bold, beautiful, and brilliant
I am beautiful, inside and out
I am ENOUGH
Now go be kind to yourself today!
