How to Get Out of Your Own Way

When is the last time you tried something new or something that scared you?

If you are feeling stuck or bored, maybe you can’t remember or it was quite a while ago. When you are stuck in a rut, it can just take one small change to get you moving on a different path, find a fun new hobby, or discover a passion.

I’ve been thinking about all the different reasons that can potentially hold us back from trying new things, because so often we are the thing standing in our own way.

  • Being stuck in a routine

  • Self-limiting beliefs

  • Comparing yourself to others

  • Being “too busy”

  • Worry about other people’s opinions

  • You’re not open any type of change, even small ones

  • Thinking there’s only 1 way to do or accomplish something

  • You don’t like asking for help

  • Fear

I’ve been there with each and every one of these reasons.

For the longest time

  • I worried what my friends would think if I wanted to go to bed early on weekends and wake up early to go to different classes or events

  • I got anxious when I wasn’t immediately good at something (and yeah I still do, but I deal with it differently now)

  • I didn’t want to try new things without a friend coming with me

  • I felt self-conscious about having new or different interests than my friends

  • I didn’t feel comfortable asking anyone for help

  • I was afraid of failing

But then, I realized it was truly just me and my own thoughts holding me back, and I also realized that I was missing out on so many things that I really wanted to do!

I started with going to one event slightly outside of my comfort zone, and it was SO freeing! And it gets easier each time. It’s kind of like a muscle, the more you work it the easier and stronger it gets.

What do you want to try?
